Den vakre, historiske festsalen i Rjukanhuset danner rammen rundt Marianne Heiers nye performance for Rjukan. I en hel arbeidsuke leser hun høyt fra et utvalg bøker hentet fra den unike boksamlingen til Det Røde Bibliotek. Tekstutvalget er gjort i samarbeid med ansvarlig bibliotekar, og høytlesningene er åpne for publikum.
Det Røde Bibliotek er en samling internasjonal sosialistisk litteratur bygget opp av bibliotekar Henrik J. Hjartøy i perioden 1917 – 1936. Den består av omkring 8000 titler, og beskriver visjoner og planer for en fremtid som aldri ble noe av. Under krigen ble store deler av samlingen gjemt unna, og Det Røde Bibliotek inneholder i dag en rekke unike bøker som ellers er forsvunnet i nazistenes bokbrenninger under andre verdenskrig. Ved å hente disse tekstene fram og gi dem en fysisk stemme, ønsker Heier å reaktivere det poetiske og politiske potensialet de fortsatt inneholder. Lar disse stemmene seg overføre til vår tid, eller har de sovnet inn for godt?

The beautiful, historic Theatre Hall in Rjukanhuset frames Marianne Heier's new performance for Rjukan. For an entire working week, she reads aloud from selected books from the unique book collection of The Red Library at Rjukan. The texts have been selected in collaboration with the library and the readings are open to the public.
The Red Library is a collection of international socialist literature built by librarian Henrik J. Hjartøy in the period 1917 – 1936. It consists of around 8,000 titles and describes visions and plans for a future that never materialized. During WWII, large parts of the collection were hidden away, and The Red Library today contains a number of unique copies of books that otherwise went lost in the nazi book burnings. By retrieving these texts and giving them a physical voice, Heier wants to reactivate the poetic and political potential they still contain. Are they still relevant to our time, or have they fallen asleep for good?
